Taxr vs SimplyWise: Focused Receipt Scanner or All-in-One Suite?

Taxr vs SimplyWise, in short: SimplyWise is a receipt and document organizer that imports receipts from your email and matches them to your bank transactions, sold inside a suite of apps built for contractors, and its site quotes US$29.99 a month or US$239.99 a year. Taxr is a focused receipt scanner that turns paper receipts and PDFs into categorized tax records, localized for 195+ countries, and Taxr Pro costs US$29.99 a year on the App Store (US$31.99 on Google Play). Both are free to start, so the real question is which jobs you need done.

What Is SimplyWise?

SimplyWise makes a set of apps for small business owners, mostly contractors: its home page is titled "AI Tools for Contractors: Estimates, Receipts, Mileage". The receipts app came first (it has been on the App Store since 2020) and now sits beside a construction cost estimator and a mileage tracker. SimplyWise says more than 2 million business owners use its apps.

In the receipts app, you photograph a receipt and it reads the store name, date, tip, sales tax and total, then files the document into folders you set up. It goes well beyond the camera:

  • Email and account import. Connect Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo or AOL and it pulls in emailed receipts. It can also import Amazon and PayPal purchases.
  • Bank and card matching. Its Reconciliation feature connects to your bank or card through Plaid, matches transactions to your saved receipts and flags what it can't match.
  • Web access and sharing. Log in on a computer as well as your phone, and share folders with family or an accountant.

It has 4.9 stars from about 38,000 ratings on the US App Store (October 2026).

Pricing depends on where you look. The free plan covers 250 saved documents. For paid plans, SimplyWise's site quotes US$29.99 a month or US$239.99 a year with a 7-day free trial, and says one subscription covers every app in its suite. The App Store lists in-app purchases for the receipts app from US$0.99 to US$89.99, including weekly options. Its help pages say spreadsheet and PDF reports are for Business tier users.

What Is Taxr?

Taxr is an AI receipt scanner built for tax records. Photograph a paper receipt, pick a photo from your gallery or import a PDF, and in about 5 seconds the AI reads the vendor, date, total and tax. It then suggests a category from your country's tax categories (Schedule C-aligned in the US) for you to confirm. The receipt image is stored with the record in the app. When you or your accountant need the numbers, you export an Excel or PDF report for the date range you choose.

Taxr is localized for 195+ countries, with the currency, tax label (sales tax, GST, VAT) and category set for each. It leaves a lot out on purpose: there's no email import, no bank connection, no mileage tracking and no tax filing. It does the receipt half of record-keeping and stops there.

Where SimplyWise Is the Better Choice

Be honest about fit. SimplyWise wins if:

  • Most of your receipts arrive by email. SimplyWise collects e-receipts from your inbox and can pull in Amazon and PayPal purchases. In Taxr, a digital receipt gets in as a PDF or a screenshot that you import yourself.
  • You want receipts checked against your bank. Reconciliation shows which transactions have no receipt. Taxr never connects to your bank, so it only knows about the receipts you scan.
  • You want one subscription for more than receipts. If you're a contractor who also needs job estimates or a mileage log, SimplyWise's suite covers them. Taxr does neither.
  • You want to work on a computer. SimplyWise has a web login. Taxr is a mobile app only.
  • You have a big backlog to try it on. SimplyWise's free plan covers 250 saved documents. Taxr's free allowance is smaller.
  • You need line items or CSV. SimplyWise reads line items, lets you split one receipt across folders and exports CSV on its Business tier. Taxr files each receipt under one category and exports Excel and PDF, not CSV.
  • You keep your books in QuickBooks. SimplyWise's site says the app can connect to QuickBooks to send or match receipts. Taxr has no accounting integrations.
  • You collect receipts from employees. SimplyWise has a Teams plan. Taxr has no team accounts (for team expense reports, see Taxr vs Expensify).

Where Taxr Is the Better Choice

  • Price. Taxr Pro is US$29.99 a year on the App Store (US$31.99 on Google Play), or US$2.99 a month. At the rates on SimplyWise's site, a year costs US$239.99, about eight times as much. The price inside SimplyWise's receipts app may be lower than its website rate, so compare what the app shows you.
  • Tax categories built in. Taxr's categories come from your country's tax category set, so the export is already grouped by tax category. SimplyWise organizes receipts into folders and spaces that you design.
  • Outside the US. Taxr is localized for 195+ countries. SimplyWise is aimed at American business owners: its receipts app is on the App Store in the US and Canada but not in the UK or Australia (checked October 2026).
  • Exports on the free plan. Taxr's Excel and PDF exports are included before you pay anything. SimplyWise's help pages say spreadsheet and PDF reports need its Business tier.
  • No account connections. Taxr never asks for your inbox, your Amazon account or your bank login.
  • Working with an accountant. SimplyWise lets you share folders with an accountant. Taxr has a free accountant portal built for practices: an accountant who uses it can invite you, and then sees your receipts, categories and totals alongside their other clients, without you sending files.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is SimplyWise free?

Partly. SimplyWise is free to download, and its free plan covers 250 saved documents, counting both scans and imports. Beyond that you need a subscription: its site quotes US$29.99 a month or US$239.99 a year, with a 7-day free trial.

How much does Taxr cost compared with SimplyWise?

Taxr costs less at published prices. Your first 10 scans are free, then Taxr Pro is US$2.99 a month or US$29.99 a year on the App Store (US$31.99 a year on Google Play). SimplyWise's site quotes US$29.99 a month or US$239.99 a year for a subscription that covers its whole suite. The price shown inside its receipts app can differ, so check before you compare.

Can I use SimplyWise or Taxr outside the United States?

Taxr, yes: it's localized for 195+ countries, with the currency, tax label and tax categories for your country. SimplyWise's receipts app is listed on the US and Canadian App Stores, and we couldn't find it on the UK or Australian App Store in October 2026. Its FAQ says Canadian taxes aren't built in yet, though you can change the currency on a receipt.

Which is better for 1099 and Schedule C records?

It depends on where your receipts come from. Taxr suggests Schedule C-aligned categories and exports a report grouped the same way, which suits paper receipts and a yearly handover to a tax pro or tax software. SimplyWise fits better if you want emailed receipts imported and checked against your bank. Both keep the receipt image, which matters because the IRS says supporting documents such as receipts and invoices back up the entries on your tax return (see what receipts the IRS requires). Taxr doesn't track mileage, and it doesn't file your return.

The Bottom Line

SimplyWise is a capable organizer with real conveniences: email import, bank matching, a web login and a suite of contractor tools. At its published prices you pay for that breadth, and it's aimed at the US market. Taxr does the receipts-to-tax-records job on its own: scan, confirm the category and export, in 195+ countries, from US$29.99 a year, without connecting any account.

If that's the job you need, download Taxr and scan your first receipt free. For the wider field, see our best receipt scanner apps in 2026.
